Russia at the Crossroads – Study the politics, culture and history of Russia at the time of parliament and presidential elections 2011/12 in English


 Description 


This program provides a broad overview of the History of Russian civilization, Political and Cultural traditions including the contemporary challenges in both social and economic spheres in the context of globalization.  Special emphasis will also be given to the parliamentary and presidential elections of Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 which will decide the future of the country   for the next decade. Our Semester (Academic year) program includes:


       
                                          
   

1.  Lecture courses:  
 * Challenges of the 2011/12 Parliament and Presidential Campaign in Russia 
   
 * Crossroads of Russian History in the Last 150 Years (1861-2011) 
 * Political Processes and the Parliamentary Elections 2011 in the context of the changing and globalizing world 
 * Living in Russia: Treasures of Russian culture and daily life traditions
                                                    
      
2.  Elective courses are

 - Independent Studies: guided research 

- Russian survival – Russian for all levels ( 3 hours weekly) 

Lectures and seminars are given by the leading experts in their field. Check their bio on our web-sites.
Each course typically consists of 12 lectures / seminars  and related field trips and excursions.
The classes   meet weekly, and the student will be advised to prepare for the meeting by reading the suggested literature. 
The courses do not have specific prerequisites, though some knowledge of the Russian History and social sciences will be of help for the students.
All courses are 3 credits (each course is 40 to 45 contact hours).
All courses are taught in English. No knowledge of Russian is required.
Students can enroll in up to 15 credits per semester.

3.  Related Excursions and field trips:  Extensive list of field trips, theatres, concerts, sport performances visits and course-related site-visits in Moscow, one of the most vibrant cities of the world where one can witness the fusion of 850 years of history and modern innovation:

weekly theatre, concert or event tickets

weekly excursions around Moscow, Moscow region or museum visit

excursions to Saint-Petersburg or Kazan (second and third Russian capitals).

4.  Accommodation and meals:
Accommodation and meals.
Our students are offered two options for housing:
-  Either in dual occupancy rooms located on campus in our university’s recently renovated dormitory with internet access and within 5 minutes distance from the classrooms
- or  in an apartment at one of our homestays.
Russia has a lot to offer as far as food goes. Enjoy some of the best soups in the world along with other tasty dishes. Homestay students are offered breakfast 7 days a week while both breakfast and lunch are provided for our dormitory students at our campus cafeteria. Don’t like the mass re-heated cafeteria food at your university back home? No problem! Each day, food is freshly prepared and cooked by our cafeteria staff. Enjoy homemade style cooking the Russian way! Homestay students can also take at vantage of the on-campus university out of pocket at very reasonable prices.
Campus facilities  include Sport halls and  indoor swimming pool located  within 5 minutes from the residence halls
