Course Description.
This course will focus on political, economic and social issues critical to the Russian development and competing approaches to resolve them.
This is a multidisciplinary course using historical, political, economic and sociological approaches. Structurally, the course will consist of 12 lectures/seminars focusing on distinct though related issues:
1. Political and Social Modernization in Russia
2. Balancing Private and Public Interests in the Economy
3. Social and Territorial Inequality
4. Russian Federalism – How much Centralism does it Require
5. Aging Infrastructure and Utilities
6. Reform of Education and Development of the Knowledge Economy
7. Russia Looking for its Place in the World
8. Financial Interests of Russia in the World Economic Order
9. Russia in the Post-Soviet Space
10. Healthcare and Social Security
11. Russia and the World of Islam
12. Prospects of Political Reform
The class will meet weekly, and the student will be advised to prepare for the meeting by reading the suggested literature (reading will be provided in electronic form).
